Phillips names Wales’ Women’s Six Nations squad

Rowland Phillips has put his faith in youth as he announced his 34-woman squad for the 2019 Women’s Six Nations.

Six uncapped players are called up by Phillips as Wales reap the benefits of the revamped regional rugby programme to promote participation in the women’s game.

While five of that number were included in Phillips’ squads for Wales’ Autumn Internationals, 18-year-old RGC hooker Molly Kelly has been added to the mix as the side look to build on their win over Scotland in this year’s Women’s Six Nations.

And with the return of the experienced Elinor Snowsill to counterbalance the exciting young stars coming through, Phillips is counting the days until February rolls around.

“We have a lot of talent coming into the pathway who have years of experience playing the game having started at a young age, while others have transferred their skills from other sports,” he said.

“There are a number of routes to get there but this young squad are showing an impressive level of commitment to the programme.

“It was pretty clear that we stepped things up in the autumn and made significant progress against quality teams.

“We still have lot of work to do but for us this season the key is to continue to build momentum from a positive autumn campaign.

“The support we received at Cardiff Arms Park in the autumn made a big difference to us. The players appreciated and clearly benefited from the backing they received and it would be great to further increase the support for the national team during the Six Nations.”

Wales get their Women’s Six Nations campaign underway against defending champions France in Montpellier on Saturday 2 February.
