Hermet and Toulouse bid for French title glory

France skipper Gaëlle Hermet and her Toulouse team will have the chance to avenge the defeat they suffered a year ago as they face Montpellier in the final of the French Elite 1 on Saturday.

Montpellier edged last year’s final played between the same sides, clinching a fifth title in six years with a 15-12 victory.

Montpellier, led by experienced French internationals like Safi N’Diaye, have enjoyed a dominant season, going unbeaten in the pool stages before seeing off Grenoble and then Bayonne to reach the final in Tarbes.

France winger Cyrielle Banet scored a double in the win over Bayonne, with fellow back three star Caroline Boujard also getting on the scoresheet.

However, they face a tough challenge from Toulouse, led by Hermet, the back-rower who also captains France.

Toulouse can also call on the likes of Ian Jason, Camille Imart and Fiona Lecat, all of whom featured for Les Bleues during the Women’s Six Nations.

Toulouse saw off local rivals Blagnac in the semi-finals, having beaten Rennes the previous week in the quarters.

Stade Toulousain have never won a French title, but their predecessors Toulouse Fémina Sports won nine titles between 1975 and 1995.
