Callender awarded Player of the Match despite late heartbreak

Wales back-rower Alex Callender was named TikTok Women’s Six Nations Player of the Match in their narrow 10-8 defeat to Italy in Round 5.

Italy led 7-0 heading into the final 10 minutes, but a penalty from Robyn Wilkins and a try from Keira Bevan put Wales 8-7 up with just four minutes on the clock.

There was then to be late heartbreak for Wales however as Michela Sillari slotted a winning penalty in the dying seconds.

But despite defeat, individually it was Callender who really caught the eye after a formidable performance with ball in hand, racking up 52 metres from 10 carries, getting two offloads away and breaking a tackle.

She was also an absolute nuisance in defence, making 17 tackles and winning a turnover in the process.

The 21-year-old said: “It means so much, having the result today is gutting, but we put up a fight and I can’t ask enough from the girls.

“Performance-wise, we started better, we just didn’t finish it off today.”

Wales are guaranteed to finish third in the Championship with a losing bonus point, while Italy have moved up to fourth, and will stay there unless Ireland defeat Scotland this evening.
