2021 Rugby World Cup warm-up matches: Preview

Emily Scarratt England v Wales Women's Six Nations 2022

In 70 days, the world’s best rugby players will take to New Zealand for the 2021 Rugby World Cup.

And to get ready for that, the TikTok Women’s Six Nations squads have a series of warm-up appointments to aid their preparation.

Italy began their World Cup warm-ups against Canada in Langford last week but were ultimately defeated 34-24 in Canada’s first test on home soil in seven years.

A late surge by captain Elisa Giordano, who went over the line in the 74th minute was not enough to overcome the Canada side, but Le Azzurre will go again against France in September.

Ireland will head out to Japan for both their warm-up games at the end of August.

Coach Greg McWilliams has named eight uncapped players for his squad in a bid that the young team can gain experience in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Ireland beat Japan 15-12 back in November but will be up against a confident side after Japan recently won their first match against a team ranked in the top five in the world, defeating Australia 12-10.

Scotland will face USA and Spain in their two warm-up matches as they prepare for their first Rugby World Cup in 12 years.

Bryan Easson’s side will be tested against the 2017 Rugby World Cup fourth-place finishers USA in Edinburgh but will push themselves against Spain just under a month before the start of the World Cup.

On September 3rd, France will host Italy in Nice, the first warm-up match that will consist of two Six Nations teams before their rematch in Italy a week later.

France finished third in the 2017 Rugby World Cup and, in the 2022 TikTok Women’s Six Nations, produced a controlled and clinical performance against Italy to win 39-6 at home.

And Les Bleues’ squad will be wanting to build confidence in the lead-up to New Zealand.

Wales announced a further 17 full-time contracts for their players earlier this month and will hope that progression as a team will help them thrive this year.

Ioan Cunningham’s squad will face Canada away before rounding up the warm-up fixtures against England in Bristol.

England will play both of their warm-ups on home turf, tackling USA on September 3rd and Wales on September 14th.

The 2022 TikTok Women’s Six Nations champions were runners-up last time out at the World Cup and currently sit as world number one.

With many fancying England to regain the World Cup after last winning the title in 2014, their outings against USA and Wales will prove how Simon Middleton’s squad are faring ahead of their trip to New Zealand in October.
